Very exciting news for IFAW, rhinos and elephants!

I have posted previously on the floods that routinely wipe out areas of India each year. IFAW has shown commitment to supporting emergency relief efforts annually during these floods. Remember all the snakes that were trapped throughout the city this past year that delayed the restoration of power for all the local villages?

When the flood disasters are not making worldwide headlines, there are still a lot of people trying to clean up the city and working to create a better life for the abandoned animals. As a result of these floods, many animals are left abandoned, homeless and orphaned.

The Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) center in India is one of those places that works year round to help animals in crisis as a result of the India floods. Every so often there is good news to share.

For the first time in 10 years a rehabilitated rhino calf will be reintroduced to the Manas National Park in north-eastern India. These rhino calves have been orphaned due to the flooding in India over the years.

The Manas Park suffered a great loss of rhinos due to extreme poaching in the area. If it wasn’t for the declaration of the Bodoland Autonomous Council (BTC) in India, no effort would be made to further protect the area as a release site for rhinos and elephants. IFAW’s partner, the Wildlife Trust of India, has signed an MOU with the BTC assuring for the protection of this area.

In addition to the rhino release, CWRC is also coordinating an elephant release. The elephant release will become the first ever elephant re-introduction effort attempted in India! Stay tuned for photos of the new Manas Park inhabitants!
