Photo of the Week: Rescued Penguins from Patagonia
Photo of Week is a feature that highlights the work IFAW does around the world everyday to rescue orphaned, injured, or mistreated animals.
Last summer, IFAW began releasing Magellanic penguins rescued from an oil spill near the Cabo Virgenes Nature Reserve in Argentina, the southernmost tip of Patagonia. A team from IFAW worked closely with Consejo Agrario Provincial (CAP) de Santa Cruz and other local organizations to stabilize and clean over 200 of the birds in preparation for the release.
All of the released birds have been tagged with IFAW Penguin Bands to help keep track of their recovery. IFAW veterinarian Valeria Ruoppolo recently returned from a follow up trip to Argentina to collect data on the released penguins. Watch for a post from her in the next few days.
