15 Day Old Elephant Calf Rescued in India's Kaziranga National Park
An elephant calf was rescued today from Phulbari Tea Estate, in Balipara north of Kaziranga National Park. The male elephant calf just around 15 days old was dehydrated and hardly made any cries for help during the entire two hour journey from the place of rescue to CWRC, an International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) WIldlife Trust of India (WTI) site... But the moment we reached CWRC, the calf made sure that it got all the attention. While Prasanta Das, our animal keeper at CWRC began the stabilization process by rehydrating the calf, the sounds of the other four orphan elephant calves currently being raised at CWRC hopefully made the calf feel more welcome. After adequate rehydration, the calf slept in the comfort of our keeper's presence.
This calf was rescued after it feel into a deep trench in the tea estate where the elephants herds were traversing in search of food from the lush rice fields nearby. This calf is among three others that were rescued this 2007 season due to displacement from natal herds either due to being marooned because of floods or falling into trenches when migrating across their fragmented habitats and or other such causes. While every attempt is made each time a calf is rescued, to locate the natal herd and reunite the displaced calf, it is not always achievable. During time too, we are making every attempt to search for the natal herd that may be in the vicinity where the calf was rescued. Another day awaits while we decide the future of this rescued elephant calf...
