The International Fund for Animal Welfare sent a team to California to assist the community responders during the recent wildfires there.

Several Saker and 1 Peregrine falcons were rescued from a man who was apprehended on a Russian train headed for Kiev from Moscow...two bags with 6 birds of prey were found with most of the birds in pretty rough shape. These birds are protected creatures under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and are now under the care of the Wild Animal Rescue Center with Sergey Ganusevich, the organizations director. The center is planning to release the birds next month...and has great experience in treatment and rehabilitation of birds of prey. IFAW supports the Wild Animal Rescue Center and your donations to IFAW help supports rehabilitations such as this one.
It's not only people that have been losing homes this past week as fires have raged through California. Many Wildlife Rehabilitation centres in the threatened areas have also been forced to evacuate. And IFAW has stood by ready to assist.
The following is a report from IFAW ER Team Member Barbara Callahan who is out in California.
The IFAW ER team worked today to relocate 21 domestic ducks, geese and swans from a Project Wildlife satellite facility in Temecula to the International Bird Rescue Research Center facility in San Pedro, CA where the animals were medically evaluated and admitted to the center. These animals will remain at IBRRC until the fire threat is over and they can be returned to the Project Wildlife facility. This facility also has a 1 year old, male deer that is a fire victim but, luckily, isn’t burned and only has some bruising and a few scrapes. The deer may need to be moved to a safer location on Thursday and we will continue to monitor and assist if needed. There are a number of donkeys in the same area that may need relocation, as well.
The IFAW ER Team has been fielding calls and requests from many wildlife rehabilitators and rehabilitation centers and worked to coordinate resources with needs, as well as supply animal transport, food and other support. So far, we have been able to respond to 10 requests.
We will continue to monitor the wildlife issues and needs as the fires progress and stand ready to respond to wildlife and other animals in need.
This past weekend IFAW rescued six abandoned big cats from an unlicensed facility in Ohio. Months ago, IFAW heard that an unlicensed owner of six big cats had been evicted by her landlord and that Ohio's Knox County Animal Control officials had seized the big cats. Together with the help of the landlord of the property, Knox County Animal Control, Big Cat Rescue, and Animal Sanctuary of the United States (ASUS)/Wild Animal Orphanage (WAO), the IFAW team landed in Gambier, Ohio in the wee hours of morning on the October 19th. This was a covert operation. We did not want to alert the unlicensed owner to this move who has a history of causing trouble. So we had to keep even the alert news media at bay.
When we arrived at the property in Ohio the six big cats, which included 2 lions and 4 tigers, were already in their lock-out cages and had fasted for more than 8 hours to enable them to travel comfortably. The Rescue team had a climate-controlled truck, six spacious crates which meet IATA regulations, and ample people to move and lift crates. The veterinary team waited in the wings should the lions & tigers had to be knocked down. But, that did not prove necessary as the animals were "trained". The presence of the former animal care givers to cajole them with their favorite treats into their transport crates was blessing in disguise. The whole operation took just 90 minutes. With the six animals safely in their transport crates and loaded onto the state-of-the-art climate-controlled truck to begin their 1,000 mile journey to Tampa and another 1,200 miles to San Antonio.

IFAW Emergency Relief veterinarian Valeria Ruoppolo and two of the IFAW Penguin Network institutions in Argentina are collaborating with researchers from the University of Washington, to follow six rehabilitated penguins back to their breeding colonies.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the French space agency are using their satellite technology to help the Fundación Mundo Marino and Fundación Mar del Plata Aquarium projects in Argentina from where the team selected the best animals to fit a special transmitter.
Each penguin, which had been recently oiled from mystery spills, has had the transmitter attached to their lower backs. The transmitter sends signals to the satellite which are then sent back to earth via NASA as an image that shows the penguins name and its path along the ocean.
One penguin in particular, named Ruoppolo, is close to the team's heart
after having been oiled and rehabilitated for the second time. Valeria
Ruoppolo, the IFAW Vet on the scene is now the
proud adopting parent...Penguin Ruoppolo has traveled a great distance
since being released from rehabilitation.

Thobani Dolfini, nicknamed Dr Bean, has been volunteering at Mdzananda Animal Clinic for about five years. He is now 16 years old.
He volunteers after school when he can, every single Saturday and during his school holidays. He is enormously popular with the full time staff and the volunteer vets, who are happy to allow him to assist during surgery and to help them in the consulting room.
Thobani's one main dream is to be a vet, but poor township education and the fact that his family are desperately poor (his father is unemployed and his mother works as a char twice a week) make it very unlikely that he would a)matriculate sufficiently well to gain access to veterinary university or b)be able to afford university.
About three months ago, the fundraiser for SA Mass Sterilisation Trust (SAMAST)sent a proposal to a television programme entitled "Let's Fix It" asking them to do a show on Dr Bean.

Melting polar ice caused by global warming is affecting marine mammals like harp seals and polar bears. Warmer oceans will likely have negative impacts on whales and if semiarid parts of Africa where elephants live become even drier, elephants will be at greater risk.
