Gustav: Update from Louisiana: September 1
Update: IFAW is now on the ground in Texas and Louisiana following Hurricane Ike. Read an update from IFAW Emergency Rescue team member Michael Booth currently on the ground in Lake Charles, Louisiana rescuing family pets and other animals.
Earlier today Hurricane Gustav made landfall, and tracked Northwest to the West of New Orleans. As the storm was doing it's worst, there was little for the IFAW team to do apart from sitting out the storm and waiting until it was safe to emerge. The megashelter is now housing a total of 1004 animals.
Tomorrow morning, the IFAW Rescue Trailer and our Communcations trailer will depart for the scene, on the assumption that there will be some significant flooding in the aftermath of the hurricane, to aid in search and rescue efforts.
