IFAW To Help Animals Affected By Record Floods In North Dakota

Our Emergency Relief team has been keeping an eye on the rising waters near Fargo, North Dakota, ready to spring into action as soon as they’re needed. The request for IFAW’s expertise came and as you read this blog IFAW’s ER team is on the ground working to save animals from the dangerous floodwaters.

The Red River in Fargo broke a 112-year-old record by climbing past 40.33 feet, the highest the river has ever been measured. The latest reports expect the river to crest at 43.5 feet for 5 days. The city’s main dike has been fortified to 43 feet, though the cold weather has frozen sandbags making it much more difficult than your typical flood. On top of all that flooding water, Fargo is buried under 8 inches of snow and ice blockages are forming in the river further complicating rescues.

IFAW is looking at an initial sheltering effort of up to 5,000 animals, primarily pets. The animals are in Fargo but the sheltering sites are a significant distance to the west. Freezing temperatures and logistical challenges will make it difficult to provide immediate, adequate care for the animals.

Dick, Gail, Chris, are on the ground in North Dakota and as soon as I receive an update from them, you'll see it right here on the Animal Rescue blog. In the meantime, more info on the teams work can be found in this press release.
